Thousands of years of historical references from different cultures across Europe, Africa and Asia prescribe Massage Therapy as a treatment for various ailments including sore muscles, headaches and stress. As modern society rediscovers the benefits of traditional therapies like massage, people are increasingly seeking complementary modalities for relief from stress, physical pain and dysfunction. Today's research reinforces massage therapy as a recommended means to benefit overall physical and mental health and a way to aid the body in healing itself naturally. Massage therapists use physical evaluation techniques to assess posture, gait, range of motion, muscle strength and joint stability. An appropriate treatment plan is developed and delivered with hands-on techniques, the use of hydrotherapy, and therapeutic exercises, including instruction in the use of gym equipment, proper posture, activity performance, and lifestyle practices. Continuing education and professional development courses are mandatory for all therapists registered with the Massage Therapists Association of Nova Scotia (MTANS).
